T\u00adhis 250 page minute book contains detailed accounts of Quarterly Meetings, A.G.Ms and Special Committee Meetings held in the vestry at Sandys Row Synagogue from 1917 \u2013 1949, covering two world wars. Apart from some occasional Hebrew words the minutes are written in English by various hands and convey the comings and goings of life at the Synagogue during that period. On occasion a Yiddish speaker is present at the meetings with someone translating but the notes are written in English in a formal style. The Committee members are all men and meetings exclude women generally apart from a few exceptional occasions when a wife or other female family member is invited along especially.\u00a0 Generally the members express patriotic opinions whilst still showing support for organisations like the Society for the Observance of Traditional Judaism. Meetings normally begin with a discussion of finances of the Synagogue and the Burial Society, followed by balances being agreed and passed, sometimes this involves heated discussions.\u00a0 Other business includes: the salaries of officials; poor attendance and efforts to improve attendance; the replacement of and problems with Readers, Beadles and Cantors; Committee elections; gifts to the Synagogue; special occasions such as anniversaries; tenancy renewal and dealings with other bodies; the effects of war on the congregation; death of members; requests for financial help with funerals; charity requests and donations; testimonials and gifts of esteem to members and an annual report from the Synagogue Representative on the Board of Deputies.\u00a0 There were also lengthy discussions pertaining to acquiring the freehold of the building. Towards the end of the book entries are more irregular and not as detailed as earlier entries.<\/p>\n
